The short version
Upfirst is the strongest all-round pick: a 14-day trial without a card, a $24.95 Starter plan, 35+ languages, calendar booking in Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly and Clio, and warm transfers on every plan. Rosie is the easiest start for a one-person business at $49 for 250 minutes, though calendar booking and live transfers sit on the $149 Scale plan. Frontdesk bundles phone, web chat, two-way SMS and a CRM in one $99 plan. Smith.ai is the choice when some calls must reach a human, because its North America-based receptionists can take escalations as a per-call add-on. Dialzara and Goodcall keep monthly costs predictable, Quo adds its Sona agent to a business phone system from $15 per user, and Newo.ai and RingCentral fit larger or multi-location teams.
Short answer
Upfirst is the best AI receptionist for small businesses that want fast self-serve setup in 2026, from $24.95 a month for 30 calls with 35+ languages. Rosie suits solo owners and trades who want 250 minutes for $49 a month plus a free website chat widget. Smith.ai has a free plan with 25 calls a month, and Dialzara is the cheapest minute-based plan at $29 a month.
This list is for small businesses, clinics, law firms and service companies that miss phone calls and want software to answer them, take messages, book appointments and transfer urgent callers. We compared documented features and published prices for 9 AI receptionists and scored each on capabilities, ease of setup and value. Prices are the cheapest paid plan in US dollars as shown on the vendor's own pricing page when we checked it. Included usage is counted in different units (minutes, calls, unique callers or credits), so the spec sheet lists what the entry plan actually includes.

Starter $24.95 per month billed monthly for 30 calls; save 20% on annual billing
Quoted from the Upfirst pricing page on November 6, 2026:
$24.95 billed monthly
Upfirst puts its main features on every plan instead of saving them for higher tiers. Starter costs $24.95 a month on monthly billing and covers 30 calls, with $1.50 per extra call, while Premium at $59.95 covers 90 calls and Pro at $159.95 covers 300. All plans include 24/7 answering, two-way texting, warm transfers, appointment scheduling, call recordings, a knowledge base, a phone number, Zapier and API integrations, team access and zero data retention. The receptionist books into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity, Square and Clio, and Custom Actions let it look up or log data in other apps with an API during the call. Setup starts from your website, and Upfirst also publishes a guide so ChatGPT or Claude can configure the agent for you. It lists 35+ languages and switches when the caller does. The trade-off is the small call allowance on Starter, and compliance BAAs require the Enterprise plan.
What it does well
- +Every plan includes booking, warm transfers and Zapier
- +Spam calls do not count toward call volume
- +14-day free trial with no credit card required
Where it falls short
- −Starter covers only 30 calls before $1.50 per extra call
- −White-glove onboarding is limited to Scale and Enterprise
- −BAAs for compliance are an Enterprise feature
- Plans
- Starter, Premium, Pro, Scale, Enterprise

Professional $49 per month for 250 minutes; annual billing gives 2 months free
Quoted from the Rosie pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Professional $49 per month
Rosie is built for owners who are on a job site or with a customer when the phone rings. Setup pulls details from your Google business profile and website, and you add FAQs, a custom greeting, an agent name and a local area code. Professional costs $49 a month and includes 250 minutes, two custom message-taking scenarios, appointment links sent by text, spam detection and a website chat widget. Scale at $149 adds 1,000 minutes, direct booking on your calendar, warm and live transfers and texting callers during the call. Growth at $299 adds 2,000 minutes, waterfall transfers that try several numbers, custom training documents and white-glove onboarding. Every plan includes English and Spanish, simultaneous calls, recordings, transcripts and Zapier. The weak spot is that booking and transfers, which many businesses want first, are not on the entry plan, so the realistic price for many users is $149.
What it does well
- +250 minutes on the $49 plan is a large entry allowance
- +Handles multiple calls at once with no busy signal
- +Website chat uses the same knowledge as the phone agent
Where it falls short
- −Direct calendar booking and live transfers start on Scale at $149
- −Professional allows only two custom message scenarios
- −Website texting is a $50 per month add-on

Business-in-a-Box $79 per month billed annually or $99 billed monthly, with 200 voice minutes
Quoted from the Frontdesk pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Answering phone calls starts at $99/mo on Business-in-a-Box, or $79/mo billed annually
Frontdesk sells the AI receptionist as part of a wider front office. Business-in-a-Box costs $99 a month, or $79 a month billed annually, and includes 200 voice minutes plus 100 website chatbot conversations, 400 text messages, 500 email drafts, 300 website form submissions and unlimited sequence workflows. An AI-native CRM stores each lead, and automations can trigger a follow-up call, a booking or an escalation when a record changes. Up to 20 outbound calls a day handle reminders. The vendor lists 20+ languages, HIPAA compliance, Zapier and setup in about five minutes from your website and documents. A 1,000-credit overage pool is included each month, with auto-reload at $10 per 1,000 credits. The trade-offs are a single self-serve tier, a hard cap on outbound calls, and credit-based overage that is harder to predict than a simple per-minute rate.
What it does well
- +One plan covers voice, chat, SMS, email drafts and a CRM
- +1,000 overage credits included each month
- +No contracts and cancel anytime
Where it falls short
- −Only one self-serve plan; volume pricing needs a demo
- −Outbound calls have a hard daily cap of 20
- −Credit-based overage takes some effort to forecast

Free plan with 25 calls a month; Pro from $150 per month for 75 calls
Quoted from the Smith.ai pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Set it up yourself with dedicated support. $150 /mo
Smith.ai comes from a long-running human answering service, and its AI receptionist keeps that option close. The Free plan includes 25 real calls a month, then $3.00 per call, along with 24/7 answering, recordings, transcripts and summaries, lead qualification, call routing, AI scheduling, analytics and native integrations such as Clio and Zapier. A Quality Studio lets you test the receptionist with simulated calls before it answers real ones. Pro starts at $150 a month for 75 calls and adds dedicated onboarding, live phone, email and chat support and custom SMS branding, with lower per-call rates at 150 or 300 calls. Enterprise from $500 adds custom prompting, full-service setup and multi-location support. Calls the AI should not handle can go to more than 500 North America-based receptionists as a per-call add-on. The cost per call is higher than most rivals here.

Business Lite $29 per month for 60 minutes; no contract
Quoted from the Dialzara pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Business Lite $29 /MONTH
Dialzara keeps pricing simple and minute-based. Business Lite costs $29 a month for 60 minutes of talk time, then $0.48 per minute, and Business Pro at $99 raises that to 220 minutes and adds warm transfer. Plus at $199 includes 500 minutes and Elite at $349 includes 1,000 minutes with priority support, multi-location setup and API access. Every plan has a self-editable prompt, message taking with custom questions, blind transfer, Zapier and Make integrations, a US phone number, call recordings, summaries and email or SMS notifications after each call. The vendor lists over 50 voices and 10 languages. Setup takes about 15 minutes: answer onboarding questions, import website content, test, then forward your number. Starter $79 per month for 100 unique customers; no per-minute charges
Quoted from the Goodcall pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Starter $79 a month
Goodcall prices its AI phone agent by how many different people it helps each month, not by minutes or calls. Starter costs $79 a month for 100 unique customers, then 79 cents each, which the vendor estimates at about 150 calls. Growth at $129 covers 500 unique customers with five external tools, five team members and 90-day call history, and Scale at $299 covers 2,000 with 15 tools and unlimited history. You can start free with a demo agent and add a phone number when ready, or keep your number with call forwarding. The agent connects to Google Calendar, transfers calls with a backup if nobody picks up, and connects to other apps through Zapier. Goodcall states SOC 2 and HIPAA compliance. The entry plan is restrictive on tools, seats and history, and the pricing page does not list supported languages.
What it does well

Starter $15 per user per month billed annually; Sona included with 10 calls of credits
Quoted from the Quo (Sona) pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Starter $15 per user per month
Quo, a business phone service for small teams, includes its Sona AI agent on every plan. Starter costs $15 per user per month billed annually and includes a local or toll-free number per user, US and Canadian calling and texting, voicemail transcripts and the Quo API. Every plan gets 1,000 free automation credits, which equals 10 calls handled by Sona, and paid credit tiers start at $25 a month for 4,000 credits. You place Sona at points in your call flow, give it your hours, services, pricing and FAQs, and instruct it to take messages, send scheduling links, transfer calls or route to departments. Calls are recorded and summarized in the same inbox the team uses. Sona supports English, Spanish and French but cannot switch languages mid-call. It is a strong add-on for teams already choosing a phone system, but the included AI call allowance is small.

- +Phone number, calling and the AI agent in one subscription
- +Test Sona's responses before launch
- +Credit packs from $25 a month scale AI call volume

Pay as you go from $0 with $1.75 per unit; AI Receptionist plan $299 per month for 200 units
Quoted from the Newo.ai pricing page on November 6, 2026:
AI Receptionist $299 /mo
Newo.ai bills by units drawn from one shared voice and text balance. A voice session from 30 seconds to three minutes costs one unit, a short session or voicemail costs 0.2 units, longer calls are billed in three-minute increments, and a text session of up to 15 agent messages costs half a unit. Pay As You Go starts at $0 with 50 free units once per new account, then $1.75 per unit, with no payment method needed. The AI Receptionist plan at $299 a month includes 200 units and drops extra units to $1.50, and adds outbound calling. Every plan includes inbound calls, web chat and social messaging, and calls disconnected as spam within 30 seconds cost nothing. Newo.ai signs a BAA before handling health data and holds SOC 2 Type 1. The subscription is expensive for a small shop, and the unit model takes more planning than a flat minute allowance.
What it does well
- +No payment method needed to start on pay as you go
- +Spam and instant hang-ups are not billed
- +Same capabilities on every plan, so tiers differ only by volume
Where it falls short
- −The subscription plan starts at $299 a month
- −Unit math for long calls and texts takes work to forecast
- −Outbound calling is off by default and needs support to enable
- Plans
- Pay As You Go, AI Receptionist, Enterprise
- Billing unit
- 1 unit per 30 second to 3 minute voice session
- Compliance
- HIPAA with BAA, SOC 2 Type 1

RingCentral AI Receptionist, called AIR, plugs into the RingCentral phone system rather than standing alone. It answers calls around the clock, handles FAQs, books appointments and collects leads, and it now answers text messages as well, including booking by text. Routing works by names, locations and keywords, and when a call goes to a person the agent passes along a summary so callers do not repeat themselves. The receptionist recognizes the caller's language and switches during the call, and setup uses your website, FAQs or uploaded documents. RingCentral lists AIR as an add-on on its Core, Advanced and Ultra RingEX plans and includes it in the AI Customer Engagement Bundle, which is priced on request. We could not confirm a standalone US dollar price for AIR on the pricing page, so the price is pending. It is most practical for organizations that already run their phones on RingCentral.
What it does well
- +Adds to an existing RingCentral phone system
- +Handles several callers at once during peak hours
- +Context-rich handoffs to live agents
Where it falls short
- −AIR is an add-on on Core, Advanced and Ultra plans
- −Standalone AIR price was not shown on the page we checked
- −Sales contact is the main path to buy

Before you pick a product or a plan
Compare included usage in the same unit
Vendors count usage differently. Rosie and Dialzara include minutes, Upfirst and Smith.ai include calls, Goodcall counts unique customers, and Quo and Newo.ai use credits or units. Estimate your monthly calls and average call length, then convert each plan before comparing headline prices. Upfirst does not count spam calls toward volume, and Newo.ai does not bill for calls that hang up immediately.
Check which plan books appointments and transfers calls
Booking straight into your calendar and warm transfers are the two features that separate a receptionist from a voicemail box. Upfirst includes both on every plan. Rosie adds calendar booking and warm transfers on Scale, and Dialzara adds warm transfer on Business Pro at $99 a month.
Decide whether a human backup matters
AI handles routine questions, message taking and scheduling, but some callers need a person. Smith.ai can send escalated calls to its human receptionists as a per-call add-on. Other vendors on this list transfer the caller to your own team instead, so someone still has to pick up.
Confirm languages before you sign up
Upfirst lists 35+ languages and switches when the caller does, Frontdesk lists 20+, and Dialzara lists 10. Rosie and Smith.ai cover English and Spanish. Quo's Sona supports English, Spanish and French but cannot switch languages mid-call.
Look at compliance for health and legal calls
Clinics and practices handling protected health information need a signed Business Associate Agreement. Goodcall and Frontdesk state HIPAA compliance, Newo.ai signs a BAA before processing health data, and Upfirst offers BAAs on its Enterprise plan.
Questions readers ask
- What is the best AI receptionist for a small business?
- Upfirst is our top pick for most small businesses: Starter costs $24.95 a month for 30 calls and includes calendar booking, warm transfers and 35+ languages. Rosie is a strong alternative at $49 a month for 250 minutes if you mainly need message taking.
- Is there a free AI receptionist?
- Smith.ai has a permanent free plan with 25 real calls a month, then $3.00 per call. Newo.ai gives 50 free units once to new accounts on pay as you go, and Goodcall lets you start free with a demo agent before adding a phone number.
- How much does an AI receptionist cost?
- Entry plans on this list range from $24.95 a month at Upfirst and $29 at Dialzara to $150 at Smith.ai Pro and $299 at Newo.ai. Compare what each plan includes, since vendors count minutes, calls, unique customers or credits.
- Can an AI receptionist book appointments?
- Yes. Upfirst books into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity, Square and Clio on every plan, and Goodcall connects to Google Calendar. Rosie sends booking links on Professional and books directly on the calendar from the $149 Scale plan.
- Can an AI receptionist transfer calls to a person?
- Most can. Upfirst includes warm transfers on every plan, Dialzara adds warm transfer on Business Pro, and Goodcall retries a backup number if the first person does not answer. Smith.ai can also pass calls to its own human receptionists for a per-call fee.
