The short version
ChatGPT is the safest default: its free tier allows unlimited text chats, and paid tiers add reasoning models, Codex, projects and scheduled tasks. Gemini is the best value if you already use Google, since its $4.99 AI Plus plan adds 400 GB of storage and Gemini inside Gmail. Claude is the pick for long documents, writing and code, with Claude Code included on Pro. Microsoft Copilot makes most sense for people who already pay for Microsoft 365, Perplexity for research with cited sources, Mistral for a low-cost European option, Kimi for agent-heavy work, and Grok for heavy X users.
Short answer
ChatGPT is the best AI assistant for most people in 2026, with an unlimited free text tier and the widest set of tools; Gemini suits people who live in Gmail, Docs and Chrome, and Claude suits long writing, analysis and coding work from $17 per month billed annually. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 per month, the cheapest paid plan we found, and six of the eight assistants have a free plan.
This list is for individuals and small teams choosing a general AI assistant for writing, research, planning and everyday questions. We compared documented features and published prices for 8 assistants, from the big three (ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude) to Microsoft Copilot inside Office, the answer engine Perplexity, and challengers from Mistral, Moonshot AI and xAI. Scores cover capabilities, ease of setup and value, weighted 40, 30 and 30. Every vendor sells usage limits rather than a fixed number of messages, so the step up from free usually buys more usage, newer models and agent features. Prices are in US dollars as shown on each vendor's own page on the day we checked; two vendors showed only local currency to us, and those are marked as pending.

ChatGPT covers the broadest set of everyday jobs in one app. The free tier allows unlimited text chats with GPT-6 and limited access to uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and Codex, which is enough to judge whether you need more. Go raises those limits and adds longer memory, though OpenAI notes the plan may include ads. Plus is where it becomes a work tool: advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and ChatGPT Work across desktop, web and mobile. OpenAI's help center lists Plus at $20 per month. Pro adds a choice of three usage tiers, Pro reasoning, an always-on agent called Dot and monthly API credits. The trade-off is that useful organization features sit on Plus, and our fetch of the pricing page showed only local currency, so we have not verified the entry price in USD.
What it does well
- +Free plan allows unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails
- +Four clear tiers, from Free to Pro with three usage levels
- +Pro includes monthly API credits for building your own apps
Where it falls short
- −The Go plan may include ads, according to OpenAI
- −Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs start at Plus
- −Our pricing page fetch showed local currency, so the USD entry price is pending
- Free plan
- Unlimited text chats, limited uploads, images, voice and deep research
- Plus price (OpenAI help center)
- $20 per month, billed monthly
- Go billing

Free plan; Google AI Plus $4.99 per month; AI Pro $19.99 per month
Quoted from the Gemini pricing page on November 6, 2026:
$4.99 / month Get 2x higher usage access than Free
Gemini's case rests on reach and price. The free plan already includes Deep Research, Gemini Live voice, Canvas, Gems and image generation, running on the Flash-Lite model. Google AI Plus, at $4.99 per month, doubles usage, adds Gemini 4 Argon, video generation, a Daily Brief, Gemini in Gmail and Vids, and 400 GB of shared storage, which many households would pay for anyway. AI Pro at $19.99 raises usage to four times the free tier and adds Gemini in Docs, Chrome auto browse, Google Antigravity for agentic coding, YouTube Premium Lite and 5 TB of storage. Ultra starts at $99.99 for the heaviest users. The drawbacks are mostly about where features land: Docs integration and browser automation need Pro, and Google lists different country availability for each plan, so check yours before you subscribe.
What it does well
- +Cheapest paid plan in this list at $4.99 per month
- +Paid plans bundle cloud storage: 400 GB on Plus, 5 TB on Pro
- +Free plan already includes Deep Research and Gemini Live
Where it falls short
- −Free plan runs on the Flash-Lite model
- −Gemini in Docs and Chrome auto browse need AI Pro at $19.99
- −Some features such as Tasks are limited to select countries on Ultra
- Free
- Flash-Lite model, Deep Research, Gemini Live, 15 GB storage
- Google AI Plus
- $4.99 per month, 2x free usage, 400 GB storage

Price
Free plan; Pro $17 per month billed annually or $20 monthly; Max $100 per month
Quoted from the Claude pricing page on November 6, 2026:
$17 Per month with annual subscription discount
Claude is the strongest choice here for work that runs long: big documents, careful writing and code. The free plan is unusually complete, with web search, file creation, code execution, memory across conversations, app connectors and Artifacts, plus Claude Design, Slides and Docs. Pro costs $17 per month billed annually or $20 monthly and adds more usage, Claude Code, Projects, more models, scheduled hand-off tasks and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Apps cover macOS, Windows and mobile, and extensions reach Slack, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Workspace. The main limitation is the usage model: limits reset every 5 hours and every week, and Anthropic says how fast you reach them depends on the model, chat length and file size. Heavy users are pushed toward Max at $100 per month, a large step from Pro.
What it does well
- +Free plan includes web search, memory and connectors
- +Pro bundles Claude Code for coding work
- +Desktop apps for macOS and Windows plus mobile, all on the free plan
Where it falls short
- −Usage limits reset every 5 hours and every week, which heavy users notice
- −The Fable model is paid with usage credits on Pro
- −Next tier after Pro jumps to $100 per month
- Pro
- $17 per month billed annually ($200 up front), $20 monthly
- Max
- $100 per month, 5x Pro usage, $100 in monthly API credits
- Ultra
- $200 per month, 10x Pro weekly usage, no 5-hour limit
- Team
- $20 per seat per month billed annually, 2 to 150 people

Free Copilot chat; Microsoft 365 Personal with Copilot from $9.99 per month; Premium $19.99 per month
Quoted from the Microsoft Copilot pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99 /month
Copilot is the assistant that comes with the apps many people already use. The free Copilot chat is a starting point, and Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month adds Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, advanced chat with higher usage than free, AI image creation and visual help from your screen or camera, alongside 1 TB of storage. Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99 per month adds the features Microsoft keeps exclusive to Premium and Pro: Cowork for multi-step tasks, Researcher for source-cited reports and Analyst for working with data, plus 2 TB of storage shared by up to six people. Microsoft is vague on limits, describing them as higher than free or extensive, and AI features belong to the subscription owner only, even on family plans. If you do not need Office, the value case is weaker than Gemini's.
What it does well
- +Personal bundles Office apps, 1 TB of storage and Copilot for $9.99 per month
- +One month free trial on Personal and Premium
- +Premium covers up to 6 people for apps and storage
Where it falls short
- −AI features are only for the subscription owner and cannot be shared
- −Cowork, Researcher and Analyst need Premium or Pro
- −Usage limits apply and are described only as higher than free
- Microsoft 365 Personal
- $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, 1 person, 1 TB
- Microsoft 365 Family
- $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year
- Microsoft 365 Premium
- $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year, 2 TB shared, extensive AI usage
- Microsoft 365 Pro
- $99.99 per month, monthly billing only, highest usage limits

Price
Free plan; Pro $17 per month billed annually; Max $167 per month billed annually
Quoted from the Perplexity pricing page on November 6, 2026:
$17 /month or equivalent, when billed annually
Perplexity is built for questions where you need to see the source. Every answer includes inline citations, so checking a claim takes one click. The free tier is a fair test, and Pro, at $17 per month when billed annually, adds deep research, more usage and memory, and a model picker that spans OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Moonshot AI, Z.ai and xAI. Pro also expands access to Computer, Perplexity's agent that creates documents, apps and tools, with 4,000 bonus credits. On the Mac, the Perplexity app lets Computer read local folders, operate apps such as Mail and Notes and drive the Comet browser. Max at $167 per month is aimed at people who run research all day. The downsides: the plan page only shows annual equivalents, plans are for personal use, and general writing and coding are less of a focus than at ChatGPT or Claude.
What it does well
- +Citations make answers easy to verify
- +One subscription gives access to several vendors' models
- +Comet browser and Mac app extend it beyond search
Where it falls short
- −Pro price shown only as an annual equivalent on the plan page
- −Max jumps to $167 per month billed annually
- −Plans are for personal use only under Perplexity's policies
- Pro
- $17 per month equivalent billed annually, 4,000 bonus Computer credits
- Max
- $167 per month equivalent billed annually, 10,000 monthly credits
- Models on Pro
- GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.7
- Mac app
- Requires macOS 15 Sequoia or later

Price
Free plan; Pro $14.99 per month; Team $24.99 per user per month
Quoted from the Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat) pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Verified students can get Mistral Pro for $5.99 / month (normally $14.99).
Mistral's assistant, now branded Vibe after starting life as Le Chat, is the low-cost all-rounder in this list. The free plan covers chat on web and mobile with limited messages and web searches, basic image generation and editing, coding sessions and more than 100 connectors, including custom MCP connectors. Pro costs $14.99 per month, or $5.99 for verified students, and raises message limits to up to six times free and searches to up to five times free, adds up to 15 GB of document libraries and unlimited scheduled tasks. It also creates spreadsheets and slides, and the same subscription covers Vibe CLI and IDE plugins for VS Code and JetBrains. The limits: prices exclude tax, and Mistral offers fewer creative extras than Google or OpenAI.
What it does well
- +Pro is $14.99 per month, and verified students pay $5.99
- +100+ connectors and custom MCP connectors
- +Pro adds spreadsheets, slides and unlimited scheduled tasks
Where it falls short
- −Free plan allows only 5 scheduled tasks
- −Prices exclude taxes
- −Smaller set of consumer extras such as video generation than the big three
- Pro
- $14.99 per month, up to 6x free messages, up to 15 GB of libraries
- Student price
- $5.99 per month for verified students
- Team
- $24.99 per user per month, up to 30 GB storage per user
- Document formats
- PDF, images, CSV, text files and Office files

Price
Free plan; Plus $15 per month billed annually ($180 per year) or $19 monthly
Quoted from the Kimi pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Plus Efficiency upgrade $ 15 / month $19 Billed annually $180
Kimi, from Moonshot AI, leans further into agents than most consumer assistants. Even Plus, at $15 per month billed annually or $19 monthly, includes deep research, document, spreadsheet and slide creation, website deployment with database support, Swarm for running several agents on subtasks, scheduled tasks that push results, premium plugins and Kimi Code. Plus also lifts limits from the free tier: two concurrent agent tasks instead of one, 20 projects instead of 2, and 20 GB of project storage instead of 500 MB. Pro at $31 adds access to the K3.1 Pro model, goal mode and one-click Kimi Claw deployment, and Max at $79 adds up to 1M tokens of context. The caveats are capacity and depth: Moonshot itself warns that K3.1 Pro requests may queue or fail at launch, and its integration list is not published in the detail the big vendors provide.
What it does well
- +Agent features such as Swarm and scheduled tasks on the entry plan
- +Plus raises projects to 20 and project storage to 20 GB
- +Annual billing cuts Plus from $19 to $15 per month
Where it falls short
- −Moonshot warns that K3.1 Pro requests may queue or fail at launch
- −K3.1 Pro access starts on the $31 Pro plan
- −1M token context only on Max and Ultra
- Plus
- $15 per month billed annually ($180), $19 monthly
- Pro
- $31 per month billed annually, 2x agent credits, K3.1 Pro
- Max
- $79 per month billed annually, up to 1M tokens of context
- Concurrent agent tasks
- 1 on Free, 2 on Plus and Pro, 4 on Max and Ultra

No US price was listed when we checked. See the Grok pricing page.
Grok is sold as one subscription across xAI's products and X. Every paid plan includes Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build, the Grok API and Cursor access, drawing on a shared usage pool, plus X benefits such as a checkmark and fewer timeline ads. Premium raises usage to four times Plus and adds the latest Grok models, faster responses, image and video creation, cloud agents and automations, code hosting and AI code reviews, along with ad-free scrolling on most of X. Super and Ultra scale to 15 and 50 times Plus usage, with 1080p video and priority access. The value case depends on whether you want X Premium as well; if you do not, you pay for perks you will not use. Our fetch of the plans page showed only local currency and introductory discounts, so we have not verified a USD price, and the page does not describe a free plan.
What it does well
- +One subscription covers Grok and X benefits
- +Usage scales clearly: 4x, 15x and 50x Plus on higher tiers
- +Includes API access, unusual for a consumer plan
Where it falls short
- −Plans page lists paid tiers only, with no free plan described
- −Our fetch showed local currency, so the USD price is pending
- −Premium tiers lead with introductory discounts before the regular price
- Plus
- Introductory plan with a shared AI usage pool
- Premium
- 4x Plus usage, latest Grok models, images and video
- Super
- 15x Plus usage, 1080p video, priority model access
- Ultra
- 50x Plus usage, earliest access to products and models
Before you pick a product or a plan
Start on the free tier of your top two
ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Mistral and Kimi all have permanent free plans, and Microsoft Copilot has a free chat that Microsoft 365 plans extend. Run the same week of real tasks through two of them before paying. Free tiers usually cap uploads, image creation and deep research rather than basic chat.
Compare what the cheapest paid plan really adds
Google AI Plus at $4.99 per month doubles Gemini usage and adds 400 GB of storage. Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month bundles Copilot with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Claude Pro adds Claude Code and Claude in Chrome, and Perplexity Pro adds deep research and model choice. Price the extras you would buy anyway, such as storage or Office.
Check usage limits, not message counts
Claude resets limits every 5 hours and every week, Gemini and Perplexity describe tiers as multiples of the free plan, and Mistral describes Pro as up to 6x free messages. Grok pools usage across chat, voice and image tools. If you hit limits daily, the next tier up matters more than the entry price.
Match the assistant to your existing apps
Gemini works inside Gmail, Docs and Chrome, Copilot inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams, and Claude offers extensions for Chrome, Slack, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Mistral lists 100+ connectors on its free plan. An assistant that sits where your files already live saves more time than a small model advantage.
