Short answer

Reading the numbers
ChatGPT is still the largest AI assistant by any measure. Weekly active users passed 700 million in July 2025 according to the NBER paper, then more than 800 million by December 2025 and more than 900 million by March 2026 according to OpenAI, which said in September 2026 that over 1 billion people use its products each week. Sensor Tower separately estimates the ChatGPT app passed 1 billion monthly active users in May 2026, faster than any mobile app before it.
Survey data gives a more conservative picture of how many people use it regularly. Pew found 44% of U.S. adults say they use ChatGPT, up from 18% in 2023, while Epoch AI put past-week use at 30% to 35% of Americans and the Reuters Institute found 34% weekly use across six countries. The difference reflects definitions: company counts include any logged-in activity worldwide, while surveys ask adults in specific countries about their own recent use.
Money is concentrated in a small paying base. OpenAI had more than 50 million consumer subscribers and more than 9 million paying business users in early 2026, and said revenue reached $2 billion a month, with enterprise above 40%. Epoch AI found only 4.6% of Americans pay OpenAI directly. New revenue lines are appearing: OpenAI's ads pilot passed $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks, and Similarweb found about a quarter of ChatGPT answers carried an ad.
Use is broad and mostly personal. The NBER paper shows non-work messages rose to 73% of consumer traffic by mid-2025, with practical guidance, information seeking and writing making up nearly 80% of conversations and coding just 4.2%. ChatGPT's lead is narrowing, though: Similarweb shows its share of AI web visits falling from about 76% to 53% in a year, and Sensor Tower and Menlo Ventures both report Gemini and Claude closing the gap.
