AI Chatbot Usage Statistics 2026

This page collects figures on how many people use AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot, how often they use them, which brands they pick, what they ask for, and how use differs by age, gender, education and country. Survey data come from Pew Research Center in the United States, the Reuters Institute's multi-country study, Eurostat for the EU, Statistics Canada and Internet Matters in the UK. Usage logs come from OpenAI's study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research and from the Anthropic Economic Index. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026, and each one is labeled with its year.

Reading the numbers

Chatbots moved from early adopters to the mainstream in about two years. Pew Research Center found that about half of U.S. adults used AI chatbots in February 2026, up from a third in 2024, and the Reuters Institute measured weekly use at 51% across six countries in 2026, up from 34% a year earlier. Eurostat's broader measure of generative AI tools put EU use at 33% of people aged 16 to 74 in 2025. Paying users remain a minority: the Reuters Institute found 10% pay for AI access with their own money.

ChatGPT still has the largest audience, but rivals are growing faster from a smaller base. OpenAI reports more than 900 million weekly active users and 50 million consumer subscribers, while Google says the Gemini app has 950 million monthly active users. Because one figure is weekly and the other monthly, they are not directly comparable. Survey shares are clearer: 44% of U.S. adults say they use ChatGPT against 24% for Gemini and 6% for Claude, and the Reuters Institute found Gemini and Copilot weekly use roughly doubled and Claude's rose sevenfold in a year.

Most chatbot use is personal rather than work. The NBER study of ChatGPT logs found non-work messages rose from 53% to 73% of the total between June 2024 and June 2025, and asking for information or advice is the largest intent. Claude is the exception on the work side: the Anthropic Economic Index shows coding tasks at 35% of Claude.ai conversations, although personal use on Claude also rose to 42% by February 2026. Survey data show advice is now as common a use as answering factual questions.

Young people lead adoption almost everywhere. Pew found 64% of U.S. teens use chatbots and about three in ten use them daily, Internet Matters found the same 64% share among UK children aged 9 to 17, and Eurostat reports 64% of EU 16 to 24 year olds used generative AI in 2025 compared with 7% of those aged 65 to 74. Country gaps are large too: Reuters Institute weekly use ranged from 57% in Norway to 42% in the UK, and Anthropic's index puts Israel's per-capita Claude use at 7 times what its population would predict.

Questions readers ask

What percentage of people use AI chatbots?
About half of U.S. adults used AI chatbots in February 2026, according to Pew Research Center, and about a quarter used them daily. Across six countries surveyed by the Reuters Institute, 51% used generative AI weekly in 2026. In the EU, Eurostat found 33% of people aged 16 to 74 used generative AI tools in 2025.
Which AI chatbot is used the most?
ChatGPT. Pew found 44% of U.S. adults use it, against 24% for Gemini, 17% for Copilot and 6% for Claude, and OpenAI reports more than 900 million weekly active users. Google says the Gemini app has 950 million monthly active users, a monthly measure that is not directly comparable.
How many teens use AI chatbots?
64% of U.S. teens aged 13 to 17 use AI chatbots and about three in ten use them daily, according to Pew Research Center's 2025 survey. ChatGPT is used by 59% of teens. In the UK, Internet Matters found 64% of children aged 9 to 17 had used an AI chatbot.
What do people use AI chatbots for?
Mostly for information and advice. Pew found 42% of U.S. adults use chatbots to search for information, and the NBER study of ChatGPT found practical guidance, seeking information and writing make up nearly 80% of conversations. On Claude, coding is the largest category at 35% of Claude.ai conversations, per Anthropic.
Are AI chatbots used more for work or personal tasks?
Personal tasks. Non-work messages made up 73% of consumer ChatGPT messages in June 2025, up from 53% a year earlier, according to the NBER paper. Personal use on Claude.ai also rose to 42% of conversations in February 2026, while the St. Louis Fed found 39.2% of employed U.S. adults used generative AI for work in a given week.

Where these numbers come from

We chose figures that measure use of AI chatbots by people, from surveys run by research centers, statistical agencies and child safety groups, plus usage logs and user counts published by OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Anthropic. Survey questions differ: Pew asks whether U.S. adults or teens ever use chatbots, the Reuters Institute asks about use in the last week across several countries, and Eurostat and Statistics Canada ask about generative AI tools in general over three or twelve months. Company figures use different units (weekly users, monthly users, paid seats) and are self-reported. Log-based shares from OpenAI and Anthropic describe messages or conversations, not people. We kept older 2025 figures where they are the latest of their kind and labeled each figure with its year. We store the sentence each number appears in, and a script loads the publisher's page again to make sure that sentence is still there. Our methodology has the details.
