The short version
Zapier is the safe first choice: 9,000+ apps, a free plan with 100 tasks a month, and AI steps that now bill on the same task model as everything else. Make is the pick for visual, branching scenarios at a lower cost per action, and n8n is the one to choose if you want to self-host, write code steps or avoid per-step billing. Activepieces is the open-source alternative with flat plans from $20 a month. Power Automate fits companies on Microsoft 365 that also need desktop RPA, Gumloop suits teams that want agents in Slack doing the work, and IFTTT is the cheap option for personal and smart home automations. Tray.ai and Workato are enterprise integration platforms that make sense once automation is owned by an IT or operations team.
Short answer
Zapier is the best AI workflow automation tool for teams that want the widest app coverage with the least setup in 2026, with Professional from $19.99 a month; Make suits people who want a visual builder with 3,500+ apps and a free plan of 1,000 credits a month; IFTTT is the cheapest paid option at $2.09 a month billed annually.
This list is for people and teams choosing a tool that moves data between apps and runs AI steps inside those workflows: routing leads, summarizing tickets, filling spreadsheets or triggering agents on a schedule. It covers no-code builders, open-source platforms you can self-host and enterprise integration suites. We compared documented features and published prices on each vendor's own pages and scored capabilities at 40%, ease of setup at 30% and value at 30%. Starting prices are the cheapest paid plan in USD. Make, n8n and Workato did not show a USD price from our location, so those three are marked pending. Relay.app was left out because it shut down in September 2026.

Free plan with 100 tasks a month; Professional starting from $19.99 per month; Team from $69 per month
Quoted from the Zapier pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Professional Starting from $19.99 /month
Zapier ranks first because it combines the largest app catalog on this list with the shortest path from idea to running workflow. Its pricing page lists 9,000+ apps, and Zapier Copilot can draft a Zap from a sentence. AI is no longer a separate product: AI steps, code and SDK calls now use the same task-based pricing as any other action, which makes cost easier to forecast. Every plan includes Zap workflows, Tables and Forms, and the free tier allows 100 tasks a month with two-step Zaps. Professional starts at $19.99 a month and adds multi-step Zaps, premium apps, webhooks and AI fields. Zapier MCP and the SDK let AI assistants and coding agents call your connected apps. The trade-off is cost at scale, since each action is a task, and there is no self-hosted edition for teams that need data to stay in-house.
What it does well
- +Largest published app catalog among self-serve tools on this list
- +Free plan includes unlimited two-step Zaps, Tables and Forms
- +Team plan adds 25 users, shared connections and SAML SSO
Where it falls short
- −Multi-step Zaps and premium apps need a paid plan
- −Task-based billing gets expensive for long, high-volume workflows
- −Cloud only, with no self-hosted option
- Free plan
- Yes, 100 tasks per month

Free plan with 1,000 credits a month; paid Core, Pro and Teams plans. See vendor pricing (USD check pending)
No US price was listed when we checked. See the Make pricing page.
Make is the strongest visual builder here. Scenarios are drawn as a canvas of modules, so branching, looping over rows and merging data are visible at a glance, which suits workflows that Zapier's linear steps make awkward. Make says it connects 3,500+ apps out of the box, and anything with a public API can be added as a custom app. Billing moved to credits in August: most actions use one credit, router and error handler modules use none, and some AI Provider features use more. The free plan includes 1,000 credits a month, and paid tiers are Core, Pro and Teams, with a Start-up Plan at 50% off Business for companies under 20 employees. Maia, Make's AI assistant, helps build scenarios, and AI agents and an MCP server are part of the product. The canvas has a steeper learning curve, and unused credits expire at the end of each term.
What it does well
- +Most actions cost one credit, and router and error handler modules cost none
- +Free plan includes 1,000 credits a month
- +Webhooks are queued and polling scenarios catch up if credits run out
Where it falls short
- −The canvas takes longer to learn than Zapier's step list
- −Unused credits expire at the end of the term
- −Some AI features through Make's AI Provider use more than one credit per action
- Free plan
- Yes, 1,000 credits per month

- Extra credits
- Bundles of 1,000 or 10,000, or auto-purchase

Free plan with 1,000 credits a month; Plus $20 flat per month for 10,000 credits; Team $200 per month
Quoted from the Activepieces pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Plus For daily builders $20 flat per month
Activepieces is the open-source pick and the best value among hosted plans. Its pricing page lists a free plan with 1,000 credits a month and unlimited flows for up to five users, a Plus plan at a flat $20 a month with 10,000 credits, and a Team plan at $200 a month with 50,000 credits, 25 users and SSO. Every plan can run in the cloud or on-prem, and the company says you can self-host with Docker or Kubernetes. The product bundles flows, agents, tables and MCPs, and a chat-to-automation builder writes steps from plain English, with TypeScript available when you need code. Its 770+ pieces are MIT-licensed and community-built. Going over your credits costs $0.007 each on paid plans. The catalog is far smaller than Zapier's, so check niche apps first, and the free plan's credits reset daily rather than monthly.
What it does well
- +Flat price for up to 5 users on Plus
- +Overage is $0.007 per credit instead of a forced upgrade
- +Free plan includes unlimited flows and API access
Where it falls short
- −Smaller connector library than Zapier or Make
- −Free plan credits reset daily and wait until the next day when used up
- −SSO needs the $200 Team plan
- Free plan
- Yes, 1,000 credits a month, up to 5 users
- Plus
- $20 per month, 10,000 credits
- Team
- $200 per month, 50,000 credits, 25 users

n8nA fair-code workflow platform with AI agent nodes and code steps that you can run in n8n's cloud or host yourself.

Free self-hosted Community Edition; cloud Starter, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans priced per workflow execution. See vendor pricing (USD check pending)
No US price was listed when we checked. See the n8n pricing page.
n8n earns third place on capability and value. Its pricing counts a full workflow run as one execution, however many steps it has, so long workflows with loops and AI calls cost far less than on step-metered tools. Every plan includes unlimited users, unlimited workflows and every integration, and the integrations directory lists 2,000+ apps and services. Builders get an AI Agent node, an MCP Server Trigger, code steps in JavaScript or Python and raw HTTP or GraphQL requests. The Community Edition is published on GitHub and can be self-hosted at no cost, which is why many teams with data residency rules start here. Cloud plans begin with Starter at 2,500 executions a month; our location saw euro prices, so the USD price is pending. The cost is ease of use: the editor expects you to understand JSON and expressions, and Git version control and environments sit on Enterprise.
What it does well
- +A 30-step workflow counts as one execution
- +Community Edition is free to run on your own servers
- +Every plan includes every integration and unlimited users
Where it falls short
- −Self-hosting means you handle updates, backups and uptime
- −The editor assumes comfort with data structures and expressions
- −Environments and Git version control need Enterprise
- Free option
- Community Edition, self-hosted
- Starter
- 2,500 workflow executions per month
- Pro
- 10,000 workflow executions per month

Pro from $37 per month with 20k credits and a 14-day free trial; Enterprise custom
Quoted from the Gumloop pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Pro Starts at $37 / month
Gumloop has moved from drag-and-drop flows to agents, and it is on this list for teams that want AI to do the work rather than follow a fixed path. You build an agent with instructions, connectors and skills, then trigger it from app events or recurring schedules, or @mention it in Slack, Teams, email or iMessage. Gumloop lists 400+ connectors, 35+ models with bring-your-own-key support, and a real browser for each agent that signs in with saved logins. Pro starts at $37 a month with 20k credits, unlimited agents and seats, and a 14-day free trial. Role controls let one person build an agent and the whole company use it. The catalog is much smaller than Zapier's, the classic workflow builder is now labeled legacy, and an 8% orchestration fee is listed on top of credits, so check costs against a real workload.
What it does well
- +Unlimited agents, seats and teams on Pro
- +Agents can be @mentioned in Slack channels and threads
- +Owner, editor, viewer and use-only roles for shared agents
Where it falls short
- −No permanent free plan
- −Classic step workflows are now marked as legacy
- −An 8% orchestration fee applies on top of credits

Free plan with 1,000 credits a month; Starter $2.09 per month billed annually ($25.08 a year); Pro $5.49 per month
Quoted from the IFTTT pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Starter $2.09 / month $25.08 billed annually
IFTTT is the budget pick and the easiest tool here for personal automation. Every plan unlocks all features, and plans differ only in credits, speed and support. The free plan has 1,000 credits a month, Starter costs $2.09 a month billed annually for 5,000 credits, Pro $5.49 for 20,000 and Pro+ $13.99 for 100,000. Applet runs, MCP usage and AI features all draw from the same allowance. You can describe an automation in plain language and IFTTT builds the Applet, or add AI Agent, Summarizer and Translator steps. MCP support lets Claude, Cursor and ChatGPT run your Applets. With 1,000+ services, including many smart home devices, it covers home and social use well. It is not a business workflow tool: the free plan polls for triggers only once an hour, and there is no branching logic or team administration of the kind Zapier and Make offer.
What it does well
- +Cheapest paid plan on this list
- +All features unlocked on every plan, including free
- +Very quick to set up for simple trigger and action automations
Where it falls short
- −Free plan checks for new triggers only every hour
- −Not built for multi-branch business workflows or team governance
- −Multiple accounts per service need Pro+
- Free plan
- Yes, 1,000 credits a month
- Starter
- $2.09 per month billed annually, 5,000 credits
- Pro
- $5.49 per month billed annually, 20,000 credits

30-day free trial; Premium $15 per user per month paid yearly; Process $150 per bot per month
Quoted from the Microsoft Power Automate pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Power Automate Premium $15.00 user/month, paid yearly
Power Automate is the right tool when workflows have to reach both cloud apps and old desktop software. Premium costs $15 per user per month paid yearly and covers cloud flows, attended desktop flows and process mining for individual users, with standard, premium and custom connectors. Microsoft lists more than 1,000 API connectors, and flows run natively inside Teams, Excel and SharePoint. Copilot can create and edit flows from a natural language request, and AI models handle document processing. For automations that run with nobody at the keyboard, the Process license costs $150 per bot per month and Hosted Process, which includes a Microsoft hosted virtual machine, costs $215. That split is the main drawback: estimating cost means counting users and bots, and outside the Microsoft ecosystem the builder feels heavier than Zapier or Make. There is a 30-day trial but no permanent free plan.
What it does well
- +Only tool here with built-in desktop RPA for legacy software
- +Premium includes premium and custom connectors at $15 per user
- +Fits existing Microsoft 365 identity and governance
Where it falls short
- −Unattended bots cost $150 per bot per month or more
- −Licensing across Premium, Process and Hosted Process is hard to plan
- −No permanent free plan, only a 30-day trial
- Free trial
- 30 days
- Premium
- $15 per user per month, paid yearly
- Process
- $150 per bot per month, paid yearly
- Hosted Process
- $215 per bot per month, paid yearly
- Connectors
- More than 1,000 API connectors

From $50 per month with Tray Helix Builder Edition and a free trial; larger plans quoted on usage
Quoted from the Tray.ai pricing page on November 6, 2026:
You can start on the Tray AI Orchestration Platform for $50 a month with Tray Helix Builder Edition.
Tray.ai is an enterprise integration platform that now has a self-serve way in. Its pricing page says you can start on the Tray AI Orchestration Platform for $50 a month with Helix Builder Edition, and a free trial lets you measure usage first. Integrations, automations, apps and MCP tools are metered in Tasks and Helix Compute Units, with no per-user or per-connection fees, which helps when many people trigger the same workflows. Tray lists connectivity to 5,700+ apps, databases, APIs and services, plus a universal HTTP connector. Helix takes apps and integrations written with AI coding assistants to production, Agent Gateway for MCP governs MCP services, and Merlin Agent Builder is part of an agent development add-on. Enterprise adds regional hosting, log streaming and on-premise connectivity. It is built for IT teams, so non-technical users will find it heavier than Zapier, and overages are settled through a true-up.
What it does well
- +No per-user, per-connection or per-runtime fees
- +Entry plan at $50 a month with a free trial to measure usage
- +Enterprise options include regional hosting and log streaming
Where it falls short
- −Usage above plan is settled through a true-up
- −Agent development is a separate add-on
- −Aimed at technical and IT teams rather than individuals
- Entry price
- $50 per month, Helix Builder Edition
- Free trial

No US price was listed when we checked. See the Workato pricing page.
Workato has the broadest scope here, which is why it scores high on capabilities and low on value for most buyers. The platform covers application integration, data pipelines, API management, low-code apps, RPA and AI agents, and Workato says it connects to 17,000+ apps, APIs, databases, files and MCP servers. It sells three editions. Standard includes recipe lifecycle management, dev, test and production environments, SAML SSO and 30-day log retention. Business MCP adds pre-built MCP servers, an AI and MCP gateway, ETL and reverse ETL, and 10 Enterprise Workbots. Enterprise MCP adds event streams, intelligent document processing and unlimited Workbots. Agent Studio and Genies handle agent work across sales, IT, HR and support. Prices are not published and editions are sold through sales, so plan on a procurement process. For a small team, Zapier, Make or n8n will cover the same everyday workflows for much less.
What it does well
- +Largest published connectivity on this list
- +Dev, test and production environments from the Standard edition
- +SAML SSO, MFA and role-based access on every edition
Where it falls short
- −No public prices
- −Standard edition includes a single concurrency
- −More platform than a small team needs

Before you pick a product or a plan
Count what you will be billed for
Every tool meters work differently. Zapier counts tasks, Make, Activepieces, Gumloop and IFTTT count credits, n8n counts whole workflow executions regardless of steps, Tray.ai counts Tasks and Helix Compute Units, and Power Automate charges per user or per unattended bot. A ten-step workflow that runs 1,000 times a month is 1,000 executions on n8n but roughly 10,000 actions on step-metered tools.
Check connector coverage for your stack
Published counts range from 1,000+ services on IFTTT and 1,000+ API connectors on Power Automate to 3,500+ apps on Make, 5,700+ on Tray.ai, 9,000+ on Zapier and 17,000+ apps, APIs and MCP servers on Workato. Look up the two or three apps you depend on and confirm the triggers and actions you need exist, not just the app name.
Decide where the workflows should run
n8n's Community Edition and Activepieces can run on your own servers with Docker, which keeps data in-house. Power Automate can automate desktop apps through RPA. Zapier, Make, Gumloop and IFTTT are cloud only, which is simpler but means your data passes through the vendor.
Look at how AI is added
Most tools now let you describe a workflow in plain language: Zapier Copilot, Make's Maia assistant, Power Automate's Copilot, n8n's Assistant and IFTTT's AI-generated Applets. Inside workflows, check whether you can bring your own AI keys, which Activepieces Plus, Gumloop and self-hosted n8n allow, since model usage otherwise draws down credits.
Start on a free tier
Zapier, Make, Activepieces and IFTTT have permanent free plans, and n8n is free to self-host. Gumloop and Tray.ai offer free trials and Power Automate a 30-day trial. Rebuild one real workflow in two tools before committing to annual billing.
Questions readers ask
- What is the best AI workflow automation tool in 2026?
- Zapier ranks first on our list for its 9,000+ apps, Copilot workflow builder and AI steps that bill on the same task model as other actions, with Professional starting from $19.99 a month. Make is second for complex visual workflows, and n8n third for self-hosting and per-run billing.
- Which workflow automation tool has a free plan?
- Zapier's free plan includes 100 tasks a month, Make's 1,000 credits a month, Activepieces 1,000 credits a month and IFTTT 1,000 credits a month. n8n's Community Edition is free to self-host. Power Automate has a 30-day trial and Gumloop a 14-day trial.
- Is n8n cheaper than Zapier?
- For long workflows it usually is, because n8n bills per workflow execution regardless of steps while Zapier bills per task. A ten-step workflow run 1,000 times is 1,000 executions on n8n. n8n's Community Edition is also free to self-host if you manage the server.
- Can I self-host an AI workflow automation tool?
- Yes. n8n's Community Edition is published on GitHub, and Activepieces can run on your own infrastructure with Docker or Kubernetes on every plan. Tray.ai and Workato offer on-premise connectivity for enterprises, while Zapier, Make, Gumloop and IFTTT are cloud only.
- What is the cheapest paid workflow automation tool?
- IFTTT Starter costs $2.09 a month billed annually for 5,000 credits. Among business tools, Power Automate Premium is $15 per user per month paid yearly, Zapier Professional starts from $19.99 a month and Activepieces Plus is $20 a month flat for up to five users.
