The short version
OBS Studio is still the default answer: it costs nothing, has no watermark or plan limits, and supports unlimited scenes, Studio Mode, a Multiview and plugins written in Lua or Python. Its weak spot is setup, since alerts, chat and multistreaming come from plugins or other services. Streamlabs packs those extras into one app and a free plan, and Ultra adds multistreaming and the full theme library. StreamYard and Restream run in a browser and are the fastest way to bring guests on screen. XSplit is the cheapest paid desktop app on Windows. vMix and Wirecast are full production switchers for churches, schools and live events, and Ecamm Live is the polished pick for Mac users.
Short answer
OBS Studio is the best streaming software for most creators in 2026 because it is free, open source and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux; Streamlabs suits streamers who want alerts, overlays and multistreaming in one app, with Ultra from $15.75 per month; and XSplit Broadcaster Premium is the cheapest paid option at $5 per month on its $59.99 yearly plan. StreamYard is the easiest choice for browser-based interviews and talk shows.
This list is for streamers, podcasters and small production teams choosing the app that turns cameras, screens and guests into a live show. We compared documented features and published prices for 8 tools: three desktop encoders built for gamers and solo creators (OBS Studio, Streamlabs Desktop and XSplit Broadcaster), two browser studios (StreamYard and Restream), and three production suites (vMix, Wirecast and Ecamm Live). Scores cover capabilities, ease of setup and value, weighted 40, 30 and 30. Prices are in US dollars as shown on each vendor's page on the day we checked; Ecamm did not show a USD price we could confirm, so its price is marked as pending. Where a vendor sells both a monthly and a yearly plan, the spec sheet uses the lowest monthly figure the vendor shows and the pricing line says how it is billed.

Free and open source, no paid plan
Quoted from the OBS Studio pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.
OBS Studio is the open-source encoder that most other desktop streaming apps are measured against. You build scenes from window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams and capture cards, and you can create as many scenes as you like and switch between them with custom or stinger transitions. The audio mixer has per-source filters such as noise gate, noise suppression and gain, and accepts VST plugins. Studio Mode lets you edit a scene in preview before it goes live, and the Multiview shows 8 scenes at once for quick cueing. The dock-based interface can be rearranged or popped out into separate windows. The trade-off is that OBS is a blank canvas: alerts, chat overlays, multistreaming and remote guests usually come from plugins, browser sources or a separate service. For anyone willing to spend an evening on setup, nothing else on this list offers this much control at no cost.

Free plan; Ultra from $15.75 per month
Quoted from the Streamlabs Desktop pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Starting at $15.75/mo
Streamlabs Desktop wraps a streaming encoder in the extras most new streamers otherwise assemble by hand. The free plan already includes a customizable tip page with no-cut tipping, more than 12 widgets such as alerts and a chat box, the Cloudbot for chat moderation, 5 active automations and dual output to one vertical and one horizontal platform. Ultra, which Streamlabs lists from $15.75 per month, adds multistreaming to multiple platforms or custom RTMP, full access to thousands of themes and reactive overlays, every app in the App Store, Collab Cam with up to 11 guests or cameras, 10GB of cloud storage, and premium versions of Talk Studio, Cross Clip, Podcast Editor and Video Editor. The app runs on Windows 10 or later and macOS 12 or later, and Streamlabs also offers mobile and Xbox streaming. The free plan is narrower than OBS in raw control, but it is faster to get a polished stream on air.

Price
Free plan; Essential from $14.99 per month billed yearly or $18.99 monthly
Quoted from the StreamYard pricing page on November 6, 2026:
$18 .99 $14 .99 / mo
StreamYard is built for shows with people rather than games. Everything happens in a browser tab: you invite guests with a link, arrange them in layouts and send the result to your channels. The free plan includes the essential studio features with 6 on-screen participants, the StreamYard logo and 2 hours of local recordings per month. Essential, at $14.99 per month billed yearly or $18.99 monthly, adds unlimited streaming, multistreaming to 2 destinations and 1080p. Core, the plan most shows will want, removes the logo and adds 3 destinations, logos, overlays, backgrounds, 10 on-screen participants, recorded live streams, custom RTMP, AI clips and 50 hours of permanent storage. Advanced adds 8 destinations, 4K local recordings, 15 backstage participants and On-Air webinars for 100 viewers. It cannot capture a local game the way a desktop encoder can, and the branding removal sits a tier above the entry plan.
What it does well
- +Runs in a browser with no install for host or guests
- +Free plan includes all essential studio features
- +7-day free trial and 7-day money-back guarantee on the first charge
Where it falls short
- −Essential still shows the StreamYard logo; removing it needs Core at $35.99 per month billed yearly
- −Paid individual plans are for individual use only
- −Free plan limits local recordings to 2 hours per month
- Plans
- Free, Essential, Core, Advanced, plus Business plans
- Core
- $35.99 per month billed yearly, $44.99 monthly
- Advanced
- $68.99 per month billed yearly, $88.99 monthly
- Payment currencies
- USD or Indian Rupees

Price
Free plan; Standard from $19 per month, Professional $49 per month
Quoted from the Restream pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Standard $ 19 /mo Choose this plan
Restream started as a way to send one encoder feed to many platforms, and that is still its core. You can push a stream from OBS, Zoom or another encoder to Restream and let it fan out, or produce the show in Restream Studio in the browser. The free plan streams to 2 channels with Restream branding. Standard, at $19 per month, raises that to 3 channels, removes the branding and adds guest channels. Professional at $49 per month reaches 5 channels, streams the studio in Full HD 1080p, records in 4K and adds dual format streaming to vertical and horizontal platforms at once. Business at $239 per month adds 8 channels, a website player, 2 team seats and co-producer mode. Every plan gets cross-platform chat, a live health monitor and encrypted RTMPS. Clips and Webinars are sold as add-ons, and the studio stays at 720p on the lower plans, so serious producers often pair Restream with a desktop encoder.
What it does well
- +Works with your existing encoder or as a browser studio
- +Free plan already multistreams to 2 channels
- +Cloud recordings and stream analytics across channels
Where it falls short
- −Free plan carries Restream branding
- −Studio output is 720p until the Professional plan
- −Clips and Webinars are paid add-ons
- Professional
- $49 per month, 5 channels, Full HD 1080p

Price
Free plan; Premium $5 per month billed as $59.99 per year, $14.99 monthly or $199.99 lifetime
Quoted from the XSplit Broadcaster pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Yearly $59.99/year $5/month
XSplit Broadcaster is a Windows desktop studio that competes with OBS on polish rather than price. The free tier is usable: it streams at up to 720p without a watermark, includes chroma key, scene transitions, plugins, AI voice clarity and AI live captions, but caps you at 4 scenes and personal use, and adds a watermark above 720p or 30 fps. Premium removes those limits and adds simultaneous broadcasting to multiple services, source transitions, a projector, a preview editor, an audio mix preview and commercial use. The pricing is the attraction: $14.99 per month, $59.99 per year, which XSplit shows as $5 per month, or $199.99 once for a lifetime license. Multi Output Mode lets you send horizontal and vertical layouts at the same time and supports Twitch Dual Format Streaming. The catch is platform support, since XSplit requires Windows 10 or 11, and the free tier's watermark rules push most serious streamers to pay.
What it does well
- +Cheapest paid plan in this list at $5 per month on the yearly bill
- +Lifetime license for $199.99 with no recurring subscription
- +Free plan streams at up to 720p without a watermark
Where it falls short
- −Windows 10 or 11 only
- −Free plan is limited to 4 scenes and personal use
- −Output above 720p or 30 fps adds a watermark on the free plan
- Premium
- $14.99 per month, $59.99 per year or $199.99 lifetime
- Operating system
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit)

Lifetime licenses from $60 (Basic HD) to $1,200 (Pro); MAX subscription $50 per month
Quoted from the vMix pricing page on November 6, 2026:
$60 USD $350 USD $700 USD $1200 USD $50 USD per month
vMix is a full production switcher in software. It runs on a Windows PC and takes cameras, IP cameras, video files, images, NDI and SRT sources, virtual sets and titles, then records and streams the result. Editions are sold as lifetime licenses with 12 months of free updates: Basic HD at $60 allows 4 inputs, 1 overlay channel and 1 vMix Call guest, HD at $350 raises inputs to 1,000 with 8 overlay channels and 4 callers, 4K at $700 adds 4096 x 2160 output, and Pro at $1,200 adds instant replay with 8 cameras, scripting and four external outputs. MAX is a $50 per month subscription with updates while subscribed. Streaming includes 5 simultaneous live streams, and GT Designer ships 100+ animated titles, scoreboards and tickers. A 60-day free trial makes it easy to test. The interface is built for operators rather than solo gamers, so expect a learning curve, and Mac users cannot run it.
What it does well
- +Lifetime licenses with 12 months of free updates
- +4K output from the 4K edition at $700
- +Supports NDI, SRT, PTZ control and Zoom inputs
Where it falls short
- −Windows only
- −Basic HD is limited to 4 inputs and 1 caller
- −Built for producers, so the learning curve is steep

No US price was listed when we checked. See the Ecamm Live pricing page.
Ecamm Live is a streaming and recording studio made only for the Mac, and it feels like a native Mac app rather than a port. A live camera switcher handles multiple cameras and screen sharing, and saved scenes let you prepare titles and split screens before the show. Inputs include HDMI capture up to 4K, DSLR and mirrorless cameras over USB, iPhone and iPad over USB, NDI sources and Blackmagic DeckLink cards. Up to ten remote guests can join from a web browser, and viewer comments from Facebook, YouTube, X, Instagram, Amazon Live and Twitch can be shown on screen. Multistreaming, custom RTMP, scheduling and automatic local recording are included, while the Zoom integration, isolated audio and video tracks, NDI output, realtime monitoring and the virtual camera are Pro features. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial, and we could not confirm a USD price from this location, so its value score is conservative.
What it does well
- +Native Mac app with HDMI, DSLR, iPhone and DeckLink inputs
- +Guests join from any web browser
- +14-day free trial with no credit card required
Where it falls short
- −Mac only, requires macOS 11.2 or newer

Quoted from the Wirecast pricing page on November 6, 2026:
Wirecast Studio Billed Monthly $59 /mo Buy Monthly Billed Yearly $59 $34 /mo
Wirecast is Telestream's production switcher and the main cross-platform rival to vMix, since it runs on both Mac and Windows. Wirecast Studio costs $59 per month or $34 per month billed yearly and includes unlimited live camera sources, NDI input, screen capture, IP cameras and web stream inputs, GPU-accelerated encoding, 2 Rendezvous remote guests, a 1 to 4 slot multi-viewer, dedicated technical support and a stock media library with over a million assets. Wirecast Pro, at $79 per month or $42 per month billed yearly, adds NDI output, cloud multistreaming, 7 remote guests, a 1 to 17 slot multi-viewer, ISO recording, PTZ camera control, sports production tools and multi-track audio recording. It encodes to RTMP and SRT and outputs to YouTube, Facebook, X and other CDNs. The price is the barrier: it is the most expensive subscription here, there is no lifetime option, and several features streamers expect, such as multistreaming, sit only in Pro.
What it does well
- +Runs on both Mac and Windows
- +Dedicated technical support team on every plan
- +Pro adds NDI output and a 1 to 17 slot multi-viewer
Where it falls short
- −Most expensive subscription in this list
- −No free plan or lifetime license

Before you pick a product or a plan
Desktop encoder or browser studio
OBS Studio, Streamlabs, XSplit, vMix, Wirecast and Ecamm run on your own computer, so quality depends on your CPU, GPU and upload speed, and you can capture games, capture cards and local files. StreamYard and Restream run in a browser tab and handle guests, layouts and multistreaming in the cloud. Gamers usually want a desktop encoder; interview shows and webinars are faster to run from a browser studio.
Check how many destinations you can reach
Multistreaming limits vary by plan. StreamYard Essential reaches 2 destinations, Core 3 and Advanced 8. Restream's free plan streams to 2 channels and Standard to 3. vMix includes 5 simultaneous live streams in its editions, and Wirecast puts cloud multistreaming in the Pro plan. Streamlabs Ultra multistreams to multiple platforms or custom RTMP, while its free plan allows one vertical and one horizontal output.
Count your guests
Remote guests are where tools differ most. StreamYard Core allows 10 on-screen participants, Restream's paid plans allow 10, Ecamm allows up to ten browser guests, Streamlabs Ultra's Collab Cam allows up to 11 guests or cameras, and vMix Call ranges from 1 caller on Basic HD to 8 on 4K, Pro and MAX. Wirecast Studio includes 2 Rendezvous remote guests and Pro includes 7. OBS has no built-in guest system.
Lifetime licenses can be cheaper over time
XSplit sells a lifetime license for $199.99 and vMix sells lifetime editions from $60 for Basic HD to $1,200 for Pro, with 12 months of free updates. Subscriptions such as Wirecast at $34 per month billed yearly or StreamYard at $14.99 per month billed yearly cost more over several years but include every update while you pay.
