The short version
Langfuse is the tool to start with: prompts are versioned and labeled per environment, the SDK caches them on the client so moving them out of code adds no latency, and Core costs $29 a month with unlimited users. PromptLayer has the most prompt-focused workflow, with commit messages, version diffs and release labels, and Pro costs $49 a month. LangSmith is the obvious choice for LangChain and LangGraph teams, and Braintrust is strongest when every prompt change must pass evals, though Pro costs $249 a month. Opik is the budget pick with open source code and a $19 Pro Cloud plan. Portkey puts prompts on an AI gateway, PromptHub gives non-technical teams Git-style merge requests from $9 a month, Helicone deploys prompts by ID through its gateway, Promptfoo tests prompts in CI for free, and HoneyHive targets enterprises that need self-hosted evaluation.
Short answer
Langfuse is the best AI prompt management tool for product teams that want versioned prompts served without code deploys in 2026; PromptLayer suits teams where product managers own prompt wording and release it with labels. Most tools here have a free tier, and the cheapest paid plan is PromptHub Pro at $9 a month.
This list is for product and engineering teams that want to version, test and deploy prompts without shipping new code each time the wording changes. Every tool here either stores prompts outside the codebase and serves them to your app at runtime, or tests prompt changes before they merge. We compared documented features and published prices on each vendor's own pages and docs, and scored capabilities at 40%, ease of setup at 30% and value at 30%. Starting prices are the cheapest paid plan in USD per month. Humanloop is not included because its site says the platform is being sunset after the team joined Anthropic.

Hobby free with 50k units a month and 2 users; Core $29 per month with unlimited users
Quoted from the Langfuse pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Core For production projects. Longer data access and unlimited users. $29 / month
Langfuse ranks first because it is built around the exact problem this list covers: getting prompts out of application code so a wording change does not need a deploy. Its docs describe non-technical team members editing prompts in the UI while the application fetches the latest version, and the SDK caches prompts on the client, so retrieval adds no latency and no availability risk. Versions and labels map prompts to environments, and each prompt can be linked to traces so you can compare how versions perform in production. The same platform covers datasets, experiments, LLM-as-judge evaluators and human annotation. Pricing is the strongest on the list: Hobby is free with 50k units and 2 users, and Core is $29 a month with unlimited users. Teams that must keep data in-house can self-host with Docker Compose, Kubernetes or Terraform. The catch is that protected deployment labels and enterprise SSO sit behind a $300 a month Teams add-on to Pro.
What it does well
- +Core plan includes unlimited users for $29 a month
- +Self-hosting guides for Docker Compose, Kubernetes and Terraform
- +Data regions in the US, EU or Japan on every cloud plan
Where it falls short
- −Protected deployment labels need the $300 a month Teams add-on
- −Hobby keeps only 30 days of data
- −Usage beyond included units is billed at $8 per 100k units

Free for 5 users and 2.5k requests a month; Pro $49 per month
Quoted from the PromptLayer pricing page on November 7, 2026:
PRO for small teams $49 per month
PromptLayer is the most prompt-centric tool on the list. Its Prompt Registry acts as the system of record for prompt templates: each template holds messages, variables and model settings, gets saved as a new version with a commit message, and is released to the app through labels such as prod or staging. The SDK runs a prompt by name and release label, so moving a label changes what production serves without a redeploy. Around that sit a playground for testing edits, A/B testing, snippets for reusable text, and Tables for scoring prompt outputs against datasets and past requests. The free plan covers 5 users and 2.5k requests a month but only 10 prompts, so most teams land on Pro at $49 a month, which adds unlimited prompts, workspaces and playground runs with pay-as-you-go overage. The gap is governance: deployment approvals, RBAC and SSO are Enterprise features, and the next public tier after Pro is Team at $500 a month.
What it does well
- +Free plan allows 5 users
- +Release labels let the app pick a version at runtime without code changes
- +SOC2 Type 2, GDPR, HIPAA and CCPA listed on the pricing page
Where it falls short
- −Free plan is capped at 10 prompts
- −Deployment approvals and RBAC are Enterprise only
- −Team plan jumps to $500 a month
- Free
- $0, 5 users, 2.5k requests a month, 10 prompts

Developer free for 1 seat; Plus $39 per seat per month plus usage
Quoted from the LangSmith pricing page on November 7, 2026:
$39 / seat per month then pay as you go
LangSmith treats prompts as one part of a wider agent platform. Its Prompt and Context Hub stores, versions and reviews the non-code parts of an agent, so behavior can change without a full deploy and domain experts can own the context they know best. Prompts are message templates you build in the UI or SDK, organize with tags and commit, and changes can fire webhooks or sync with GitHub. Contexts go further, bundling instructions and tools into versioned skills or agents promoted through environments. The Playground tests prompts against custom endpoints and models, with chat help to rewrite prompts and generate schemas. Every prompt runs next to LangSmith tracing and online and offline evals. The free Developer plan is a single seat with 5k traces, and Plus costs $39 per seat a month with pay-as-you-go usage. Per-seat pricing gets expensive for large prompt-editing teams, and the platform makes most sense if you already use LangChain.
What it does well
- +Prompts change agent behavior without a full deploy
- +Free Developer plan includes 5k base traces a month
- +Cloud, hybrid or self-hosted options on Enterprise
Where it falls short
- −Developer plan is limited to 1 seat
- −Usage beyond included traces is metered in LangChain Standard Units
- −Self-hosting needs the Enterprise plan
- Developer
- $0, 1 seat, 5k base traces a month
- Plus
- $39 per seat per month, 10k base traces a month
- Data location
- US or EU cloud

Starter free with unlimited users; Pro $249 per month
Quoted from the Braintrust pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Pro For AI native teams $249 / month
Braintrust comes at prompt management from the evaluation side. Prompts are created in the Braintrust UI and referenced from code by slug, and its docs state that changes made in the UI take effect immediately without redeploying the application. You can call invoke() to let Braintrust run the prompt and log inputs, outputs and the version used, or call loadPrompt() and build() to compile the template into parameters for your own model client. Versions can be pinned or assigned to environments, and A/B testing between versions is supported. The reason teams pick it is what surrounds the prompt: unlimited playgrounds, datasets and experiments, scoring, and traces filtered by the prompt version that produced them. The free Starter plan includes unlimited users, $10 of model credits, 1 GB of processed data and 10k scores. The paid jump is steep, though: Pro is $249 a month, and environments, one of the key release controls, sit on that tier.
What it does well
- +Free Starter plan has unlimited users and projects
- +Prompt version is recorded in trace metadata
- +6 to 12 months of Pro free for qualifying startups
Where it falls short
- −Pro costs $249 a month, the highest paid entry tier here
- −Starter keeps data for 14 days
- −Environments and custom charts are Pro features
- Starter
- $0, $10 model credits, 1 GB processed data, 10k scores

Open source free; Free Cloud for up to 10 members; Pro Cloud $19 per month
Quoted from the Opik pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Expanded usage for teams $19 Per month
Opik, from Comet, offers the lowest-cost path to full prompt versioning on a tracing platform. Its Prompt Library keeps prompts outside the codebase, versions each change automatically and links the exact version that ran to its trace. In code you fetch a prompt by name and choose what you get: the latest version, a pinned version such as v3, or whatever is deployed to an environment like production, which you change from the Opik UI rather than in code. Chat prompts with system, user and assistant roles are supported. Beyond versioning, Opik adds prompt and tool optimization with 8+ algorithms, test suites with assertions, 30+ built-in evaluation metrics and an MCP server and skills for coding assistants. The open source edition is free and shares one codebase with the cloud. Free Cloud covers up to 10 members and 25k spans a month, and Pro Cloud is $19 a month for up to 50 members. Enterprise controls such as SSO need a custom plan.
What it does well
- +Pro Cloud costs $19 a month, the cheapest paid cloud plan among the tracing platforms here
- +Open source edition uses the same codebase as the hosted versions
- +60-day data retention even on the free cloud plan
Where it falls short
- −Pro Cloud caps teams at 50 members
- −SSO and flexible deployments are Enterprise only
- −The Ollie assistant needs purchased tokens after the trial
- Free Cloud
- Up to 10 members, 25k spans a month, 60-day retention
- Pro Cloud

Developer free with 10k logs a month and 3 prompt templates; Production $49 per month
Quoted from the Portkey pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Production $49/month
Portkey is a gateway first, and its Prompt Engineering Studio puts prompt management on the same path as model routing. You build and compare prompts in a multimodal playground, testing them side by side across 1600+ models, then save them to a Prompt Library organized in folders with access controls. Any update to a saved prompt creates a new version, you can switch back to an older version at any time, and stable versions are promoted to production and served through API endpoints. Prompt Partials let several prompts share standard instructions, and prompt observability shows how each one performs. For teams that already need fallbacks, load balancing, caching and guardrails, this removes a separate tool. The free Developer plan is for prototyping, with 10k logs a month and only 3 prompt templates. Production costs $49 a month with unlimited templates, 100k logs and $9 per extra 100k requests. Governance features like SSO and budget limits are Enterprise only.
What it does well
- +Prompt management sits in the same product as gateway routing and caching
- +Production plan includes unlimited templates for $49 a month
- +Switch back to any older prompt version
Where it falls short
- −Free Developer plan allows only 3 prompt templates
- −Free plan keeps logs for 3 days and is not meant for production
- −SSO and budget limits are Enterprise features
- Developer
- Free, 10k recorded logs a month, 3 prompt templates

Free with public prompts; Pro $9 per month for one user; Team $15 per user per month
Quoted from the PromptHub pricing page on November 7, 2026:
$9 /month For solo users that want private prompts and higher limits
PromptHub borrows its workflow from Git. You edit a prompt, open a merge request to notify the team, review the logged changes to prompt text, parameters or model, then approve and deploy to an environment. The PromptHub API returns the latest prompt from any branch, which is how an application picks up approved changes without a code release. Testing tools include a playground, batch testing, chat testing, prompt chains and forms, plus a prompt generator and enhancers. Pricing is the lowest here: the free plan includes unlimited team members and 2,000 requests a month, but every prompt is public; Pro is $9 a month for a single user with private prompts and full API access; Team is $15 per user a month and adds evaluations, CI/CD pipelines and permissions. You bring your own model API keys. PromptHub does not try to be an observability platform, so production tracing and cost tracking need another tool.
What it does well
- +Cheapest paid plan on the list at $9 a month
- +Merge requests log changes to prompts, parameters and models
- +Yearly billing saves 25%
Where it falls short
- −Free plan prompts are all public
- −Evaluations and pipelines need the Team plan
- −No tracing or production observability like the platforms above it
- Free
- Unlimited members, public prompts only, 2,000 requests a month
- Pro
- $9 per month, single user, private prompts, 10,000 requests
- Team
- $15 per user per month, 50,000 requests
- Model keys
- Bring your own API keys

Hobby free with 10,000 requests; Pro $79 per month plus usage
Quoted from the Helicone pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Pro POPULAR $79 per month For growing teams.
Helicone is an observability tool with a gateway, and its prompt management rides on that gateway. You build a prompt in the playground, save it with commit history and tags, and then reference its ID in AI Gateway chat completion requests along with the inputs; Helicone assembles the final prompt, so iterating needs no rebuild or redeploy. Versions can be compared and rolled back instantly, and production, staging and development can run different versions. Variables work anywhere in the prompt, including tool schemas. Around this you get request logging, sessions, user analytics, caching, rate limits and fallbacks. Hobby is free with 10,000 requests and one seat, and Pro is $79 a month plus usage with unlimited seats and a 7-day trial. Two caveats: prompt management is documented for Chat Completions on the gateway, and the site currently states that Helicone is no longer part of Mintlify, with details to come, so check the roadmap before committing.
What it does well
- +Prompt changes deploy without rebuilding or redeploying the app
- +Pro adds unlimited seats with a 7-day free trial
- +50% off the first year for eligible startups
Where it falls short
- −Prompt management works with Chat Completions on the AI Gateway
- −Hobby plan allows 1 seat and 7 days of retention
- −Its site says Helicone is no longer part of Mintlify, with details still to come
- Hobby
- Free, 10,000 requests, 1 GB storage, 1 seat
- Pro
- $79 per month plus usage, unlimited seats
- Team

Developer free with 10,000 events a month and up to 5 users; Enterprise custom
Quoted from the HoneyHive pricing page on November 7, 2026:
10,000 events per month
HoneyHive lists prompt management as one of its core feature groups, next to observability and evaluation. The pricing page includes a playground, prompt versioning and history, functions and external tools, prompt deployments and custom model providers on both plans. In the playground, HoneyHive versions a prompt automatically when you run a test case against an edit, and you name and save the versions you want to keep as prompt-model configurations that can be shared with teammates. Evaluation is the strength: online evaluation with sampling, experiments with regression tracking, CI/CD integration, and code, LLM-as-judge and human evaluators with annotation queues. The free Developer plan covers 10,000 events a month, up to 5 users and 30 days of retention. Beyond that there is only Enterprise at custom pricing, which adds unlimited users and workspaces, SAML SSO and self-hosted, hybrid or single-tenant deployment. Smaller teams that outgrow the free plan have no published middle tier to move to.
What it does well
- +Prompt deployments are included on the free Developer plan
- +Self-hosted, hybrid or single-tenant options on Enterprise
- +SOC-2 Type II, GDPR and HIPAA compliance listed
Where it falls short
- −No published paid tier between free and Enterprise
- −Free plan data is hosted in AWS US-West-2 only
- −Developer plan limited to 1 workspace and 5 users
- Developer
- Free, 10,000 events a month, up to 5 users, 30-day retention

Community edition free and open source; Enterprise custom
Quoted from the Promptfoo pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Our open-source tool, perfect for individual developers and small teams.
Promptfoo covers the testing half of prompt management rather than the serving half. It is an open source CLI and library: you declare prompts, test cases and providers in a config, run the evaluation, and review outputs in a matrix view in the terminal or web viewer, with automatic scoring against metrics you define. It runs entirely on your machine, talks directly to the model, and slots into CI/CD, so a pull request that changes a prompt can fail if quality drops. Red teaming and vulnerability scanning are built in, with 10k probes a month free in the Community edition. Promptfoo works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, Google, Hugging Face and custom APIs, from any language. What it does not do is store or serve prompts at runtime, so it will not let a product manager change production wording without a deploy. Team sharing, monitoring and SSO need an Enterprise quote.
What it does well
- +Community edition includes all evaluation features for free
- +Runs locally, so evals talk directly to the model
- +Language agnostic and works with any LLM API
Where it falls short
- −No prompt registry or runtime prompt serving
- −Team sharing and collaboration are Enterprise features
- −No published price for Enterprise
- Community
- Free, all LLM evaluation features, 10k red-team probes a month
- Enterprise
- Custom pricing, managed cloud
- On-premise

Before you pick a product or a plan
Decide who edits prompts
If product managers or domain experts will change prompt wording, pick a tool with a UI editor and release labels, such as Langfuse, PromptLayer or PromptHub. If only engineers touch prompts and they live in Git, Promptfoo can test changes in CI without a separate registry.
Check how the app gets the prompt
Most tools serve prompts through an SDK call by name and label or environment: Langfuse, PromptLayer, Braintrust and Opik work this way. Portkey and Helicone inject prompts at the gateway, so the app sends a prompt ID instead of text. Langfuse caches prompts in the SDK, which avoids an extra network hop on every request.
Look for release controls
Labels or environments decide which version production serves. Protected labels in Langfuse need the $300 a month Teams add-on, deployment approvals in PromptLayer are Enterprise only, and environments in Braintrust come with Pro. PromptHub uses merge requests for review on every paid plan.
Tie prompt versions to results
A version history is only useful if you can see which version produced which output. Langfuse, Opik and Braintrust record the prompt version on each trace, and Braintrust, LangSmith and HoneyHive add experiments and evals so you can compare versions on a dataset before release.
Compare the real monthly cost
Entry prices range from $9 for PromptHub Pro to $249 for Braintrust Pro, and most add usage fees: Langfuse charges $8 per 100k units over the included amount, Portkey $9 per extra 100k requests, and LangSmith bills seats at $39 each. Count seats and monthly traffic before comparing headline prices.
Questions readers ask
- What is the best AI prompt management tool in 2026?
- Langfuse ranks first on our list for teams that want prompts versioned, labeled per environment and served to the app without a deploy, with Core at $29 a month and a free Hobby plan. PromptLayer is second for teams that want a prompt registry with commit messages and release labels, from $49 a month.
- How do prompt management tools let you change prompts without redeploying?
- The app fetches the prompt at runtime by name and a label or environment such as production instead of hardcoding the text. When someone saves a new version and moves the label in the tool's UI, the next request picks it up. Braintrust's docs, for example, state that UI changes take effect immediately without redeploying.
- Is there a free prompt management tool?
- Yes. Langfuse, PromptLayer, LangSmith, Braintrust, Opik, Portkey, PromptHub, Helicone and HoneyHive all have free plans with limits, and Promptfoo and Opik are open source. PromptHub's free plan makes all prompts public, so private prompts start at $9 a month.
- Can I self-host a prompt management tool?
- Langfuse publishes self-hosting guides for Docker Compose, Kubernetes and Terraform, and Opik's open source edition uses the same codebase as its cloud. Promptfoo runs locally. LangSmith, PromptLayer, Helicone and HoneyHive offer self-hosted deployment on their Enterprise plans.
- What happened to Humanloop?
- Humanloop's site says the team is joining Anthropic and that the Humanloop platform is being sunset, with a migration guide for customers. We left it off this list because it is no longer sold.
