Conversational AI Statistics 2026
This page collects 48 figures on conversational AI: chatbots, voicebots and voice assistants that talk with people in text or speech. It covers the size of the market and spending forecasts, how many businesses use virtual agents, how consumers use chat and voice assistants, how many conversations bots resolve without a person, and how customers rate the experience. Official statistics come from Statistics Canada, Eurostat and the U.S. Census Bureau, consumer surveys from Pew Research Center, Edison Research, Five9, Zendesk and Qualtrics, forecasts from Gartner, Juniper Research and Grand View Research, and operating results from Google, Intercom, Salesforce and Bank of America. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026; a few older Gartner and NBER figures are kept as baselines and labeled with their year.

Short answer
Conversational AI is a fast-growing but still mid-sized market: Grand View Research expects it to reach $41.39 billion by 2030, and Juniper Research puts 2025 conversational AI service revenue at $14.6 billion. Adoption is broad among large firms, with 50.5% of Canadian businesses with 100 or more employees that use AI running virtual agents or chat bots (Statistics Canada, 2026), yet only 20% of consumers use AI most of the time when they seek service and 92% give it less than 10 minutes before asking for a person (Five9, 2026).

Reading the numbers
Market estimates vary by definition, but they agree on direction. Grand View Research forecasts a $41.39 billion conversational AI market by 2030, growing 23.7% a year, while Juniper Research measures a narrower slice of conversational AI service revenue at $14.6 billion in 2025 and expects agentic conversational AI services to grow from $2.4 billion in 2026 to $8.5 billion by 2030. Spending inside companies is moving the same way: Gartner found AI spending by customer service leaders rose 38% in 2026 while their overall budgets grew 2%.
Official business surveys show that chatbots are one of the most common uses of AI, but AI itself is still used by a minority of firms. Statistics Canada reports that 28.2% of AI-using Canadian businesses ran virtual agents or chat bots in 2026, rising to 50.5% among AI users with 100 or more employees. The U.S. Census Bureau puts overall business AI use between 17% and 20% from December 2025 to May 2026, and Eurostat found that 8.76% of EU enterprises used AI that generates written or spoken language in 2025.
Consumers now meet conversational AI mostly through general assistants and smart speakers. Pew Research Center found about half of U.S. adults use AI chatbots and about a third own a smart speaker, Edison Research puts smart speaker ownership at 39% of Americans 12 and older, and Google says the Gemini app has reached one billion users. Company-run service bots are a different story: Five9 found only 20% of consumers use AI most of the time when they contact a company, and 48% try to avoid it.
Where bots are deployed by mature teams, vendors report high resolution rates: Intercom says its Fin agent averages 76% across more than 12,000 customers, and Salesforce says its own help site agent resolved more than 84% of questions with only 4% handed to a person. These are self-measured figures. Customer trust still depends on a human fallback: Five9 found trust in AI rises from 26% to 55% when a person is reachable, and Gartner found 54% of U.S. customers trust human agents more than AI for recommendations.

Where these numbers come from
We chose figures that measure conversational AI directly: market and spending forecasts, business use of virtual agents, chatbots and voicebots, consumer use of chat and voice assistants, resolution rates, and customer trust. Official statistics come from Statistics Canada, Eurostat and the U.S. Census Bureau; consumer surveys from Pew Research Center, Edison Research, Five9, Zendesk and Qualtrics; forecasts from Gartner, Juniper Research and Grand View Research. Market forecasts use different definitions and should not be compared as one series. Resolution rates from Intercom and Salesforce and usage counts from Google and Bank of America are self-reported by the companies and use their own definitions. Survey populations differ by country and age (Pew covers U.S. adults, Edison covers Americans 12 and older, Five9 covers the U.S., U.K. and Germany). We kept 2022 to 2024 figures from Gartner and NBER only where they are the latest of their kind and labeled each with its year. We store the sentence each number appears in, and a script loads the publisher's page again to make sure that sentence is still there. Our methodology has the details.
