The OpenAI Agents SDK is the fastest route from idea to working agent. OpenAI built it around very few primitives: agents with instructions and tools, handoffs or agents-as-tools for delegation, and guardrails that validate inputs and outputs in parallel with the run. On top of that come sessions for persistent memory, human-in-the-loop hooks, MCP tool calling and built-in tracing that connects to OpenAI's evaluation and fine-tuning tools. Newer additions include sandbox agents that work inside isolated, resumable workspaces, and realtime voice agents. The SDK is MIT licensed, available for Python and TypeScript, and replaces OpenAI's earlier Swarm experiment. It uses the Responses API by default, and other providers plug in through LiteLLM or Any-LLM adapters, so it is not locked to OpenAI, but it is clearly tuned for it. There is no hosted deployment layer, so you run agents on your own infrastructure.

Who it is for

Developers who want a working agent quickly with few abstractions, especially on OpenAI models.

Price

Free and open source (MIT); you pay for model usage.

We're committed to continuing to build the Agents SDK as an open source framework so others in the community can expand on our approach.

Key features

  • Agents, handoffs and guardrails as the core primitives
  • Sandbox agents that run in isolated, resumable workspaces
  • Realtime and voice agents with speech-to-text and text-to-speech pipelines
  • Sessions for persistent working memory
  • Built-in tracing linked to OpenAI evaluation and fine-tuning tools

Strengths and weaknesses

  • Strength: A first agent takes a few lines of Python
  • Strength: Guardrails run in parallel with the agent and fail fast
  • Strength: Function tools get automatic schemas with Pydantic validation
  • Weakness: Defaults to the OpenAI Responses API, so other models need an adapter
  • Weakness: No hosted deployment product of its own
  • Weakness: Fewer explicit workflow controls than LangGraph or Microsoft Agent Framework

Key facts

  • License: MIT
  • Install: pip install openai-agents
  • Predecessor: Swarm
  • MCP: Built-in MCP server tool calling

Where it ranks

OpenAI Agents SDK is No. 3 in our Best AI Agent Frameworks verdict.
