Amp takes a different approach from the editor-based tools. Each agent thread runs in its own remote machine, an orb, loaded with your code, plugins and tools, so there are no local worktrees or port conflicts and agents keep working after you close your laptop. You can follow them from the web, a terminal or a phone, preview the running app through portals and review changes from any device. Amp charges for orb time rather than tokens: you can use your ChatGPT or Claude subscriptions or your own API keys with no Amp token fees. The Hobby plan is free with pay-as-you-go hosted orbs and unlimited self-hosted orbs, and Individual starts at $20 a month with 45,000 hosted orb minutes. Teams workspaces add sharing, permissions, pooled credits and SSO at no extra charge. The orb model takes adjustment, which keeps its ease-of-setup score lower.
