Head to head

ChatGPT vs Claude

By the DBotMaker research desk · Updated November 6, 2026

Our verdict

ChatGPT scores 9.1 and ranks first in our AI assistant list; Claude scores 8.9 and ranks third. The gap comes from capabilities and setup. ChatGPT covers more everyday jobs in one app, its free tier allows unlimited text chats, and Plus adds reasoning models, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and expanded Codex usage. Claude has the more complete free plan for work, with web search, file creation, code execution, memory and app connectors, and its Pro plan bundles Claude Code at a lower annual price. Both score 8.6 for value. The main thing to check with Claude is its usage model, which resets every 5 hours and every week. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run either assistant through a long-term test.

Pricing: close at the main tier

OpenAI's help center lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month. Claude Pro is also $20 billed monthly, but drops to $17 per month when you pay $200 for a year, so Claude is cheaper for anyone willing to commit. Above that, the two diverge. ChatGPT Pro offers a choice of three usage tiers along with Pro reasoning and monthly API credits. Claude's next steps are Max at $100 per month, with 5x Pro usage and $100 in monthly API credits, and Ultra at $200 per month. ChatGPT also has Go, a lower tier with higher limits than Free, but our fetch of OpenAI's pricing page showed local currency, so we have not confirmed its USD price.

Free plans

ChatGPT's free tier allows unlimited text chats with GPT-6, plus limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and Codex. That makes it the easier free assistant to use every day without hitting a wall. Claude's free plan has more work features: web search, file creation, code execution, memory across conversations, app connectors and Artifacts, along with desktop apps for macOS and Windows. Its trade-off is usage that resets every 5 hours and every week, and Anthropic says how quickly you reach the limit depends on the model, chat length and file size.

Writing, documents and code

Claude is built around long work. Projects keep files and instructions together, Artifacts turn output into documents and small apps, and Claude Code comes with Pro, so developers do not need a second subscription. ChatGPT answers with breadth: Codex for coding, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs on Plus, and ChatGPT Work across desktop, web and mobile. For a developer, both paid plans include a coding agent. For someone drafting reports and specs from large source files, Claude's design fits more closely.

Ease of setup and integrations

We score ChatGPT 9.2 and Claude 8.8 for ease of setup. ChatGPT's four tiers are easy to understand, and its apps cover web, iOS, Android and desktop. Claude's apps cover web, macOS, Windows and mobile, and Anthropic documents extensions for Chrome, Slack, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Workspace, which matters if you want the assistant inside tools you already use. The usage model is the part that takes longer to learn on Claude, since heavy users have to plan around the 5-hour and weekly windows.

Who should pick which

Choose ChatGPT if you want one assistant for many kinds of tasks, including images, voice and research reports, or if you plan to stay on a free plan. Choose Claude if most of your work is writing, analysis of long documents or code, and you would like Claude Code included at $17 per month billed annually. Both offer free plans, so the cheapest way to decide is to run the same real task through each before paying.
